Worst song ever?

I was reminded today that some magazine or other (or some group, we'll call them "they") decided, back in 2004, that Starship's "We Built This City" is the worst rock song ever. Huh? Yes, I admit that the song bugs me. But honestly, can't you think of dozens, if not hundreds, of songs that are worse than that? Right off the top of my head, what about: Britney Spears "Oops I Did it Again" (or anything else she's ever sung), Hanson's "Mmmm Bop," Crash Test Dummies' "Mmm Mmm Mmm," Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You," Amy Grant's "Baby Baby," the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes," or Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On?" Horrible songs, all of them, and almost impossible to get out of my head.

So, do you guys agree with their choice? What would you say is the worst song ever?

I don't know about worse song "ever", but I must be the only woman in southern california that hates Gnarls Barkley. ENOUGH ALREADY. I can't tell you how many times a day that song is on the radio.

on another tangent.. have you noticed how many songs out there today are absolutely obsessed with oral sex? I can't tell you how many songs I encounter where that song is a major theme.

Nope, you're not the only one. I have HATED Gnarls Barkley since the first second I heard him. But I sometimes feel alone in hating Panic! At the Disco. You know I love the Cure, so I can't complain that they wear makeup, but I can complain that they wear it like total pretty boys, perfectly applied.

I haven't noticed the trend you mentioned, what stations are you listening to? Actually, it probably doesn't matter, since they all sound the same anymore. KROQ used to be reliably different, but those days are gone. As far as I can tell, their current playlist includes only three groups: Red Hot Chili Peppers, She Wants Revenge, and The Killers. And I'm sick to death of all of them.

I liked the majority of the songs you've listed. Celine Dion and Crash Test Dummies and Amy Grant being the exceptions.

I group Hanson in with the Spice Girls. They're what you listen to when you're in a bad mood. You can't be upset and listen to their music. It's just too light hearted.

As for worst song ever? Achey Breaky Heart wins hands down.

Achey Breaky Heart is pretty bad. Even people who like country hate it.

Although, playing particular songs till people hate them is nothing new. In '95 I got very sick and tired of Blues Traveler and Hootie and the Blowfish.

I have to agree with Dan... Some songs I hate simply because they're overplayed. I'm clinging desperately to my love of "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service even though it's getting played to death lately. And our friends The Killers: I didn't like "When You Were Young" at first, then I did, and now I hate it with a passion because I heard it four times in two hours the other day. I think that's the best way to kill a song.
